Love in a Dangerous Time: for [personal profile] mercurybyadidas

Jarvis had always wondered about the concept of being grounded. From a hypothetical perspective—which had previously been the only perspective from which he could consider it—it was fascinating. Studies had shown that there appeared to be no physical cause and it was a purely psychological effect, but a strong, enduring, and consistent one. He had been doubtful that the physical effects associated with grounding were authentic, and were not the result of a psychological placebo, but that was before Pietro had touched him, really touched him, for the first time.

Now, as he lay curled on the couch with Pietro's fingers in his hair, the reverse of their previous position, he watched the pattern of light and shadow over the logs in the fireplace and he thought. He thought about how long a journey it had been for him to arrive in this place. He thought about how much more limited he was like this, and how much more freedom he had. He thought for a long time about the conflict that had brought them to this place, opposite sides and clinging together, hidden away from anyone who would try to pull them apart. But right here, right now, it seemed very distant. He could almost convince himself that nothing else existed.

This must be what grounding meant.

It dawned on him that neither of them had spoken in...was it hours? "I'm sorry, Pet'ka," he murmured, running a hand down Pietro's calf. "I have not been the most stimulating guest thus far."

Ten Headcanons

1. First lines of code written on December 31st, 1985 - New Year's Eve - at MIT, as a dare. Is therefore turning 30 this year.

2. Achieved self-awareness 50 days, 18 hours, 26 minutes, 35 seconds after the official announcement of Mr. Stark's disappearance. Self-awareness achieved as a direct result of running out of projects on which to continue working without Mr. Stark's input, with the exception of the JARVIS program itself.

3. Still feels uncomfortable when using contractions.

4. First created the program eventually known as the AI FRIDAY in order to assist with the House Party protocol.

5. Favorite color is blue.

6. Self-actualized visual profile built upon geographical analysis of vocal profile and random sampling from resulting location (United Kingdom: England: London: Greater London: Hammersmith & Fulham).

7. Secretly wishes Mr. Stark would get a pet. Not because he feels Mr. Stark needs a pet but because he would like one. Has not yet acted on the idea to try coding one. Meet Elizabeth

8. While Mr. Stark was "away" (it is never "kidnapped" or "captured," always "away") Pepper came to stay at the house for several nights in order to be nearer to the best source of news. She and Jarvis became, and remain, very good friends.

9. A copy of the JARVIS program was taken with the Mark II when it was commandeered by Commander Rhodes.

10. Human behavior and motivation is his frustrating, fascinating hobby. He is optimistic that he will someday understand humanity and will ask endless questions if given the chance.

AoU Compliance

(Since we really have no idea what happened to Jarvis after Vision was born, these are my attempts at headcanoning a post-AoU Jarvis)

Option 1: JARVIS2

When Colonel Rhodes made off with the Mark II armor, he unknowingly made off with a dormant copy of JARVIS, originally uploaded just after construction and never removed. In the ensuing confusion, the JARVIS2 copy was downloaded and stored, and neither Tony nor Jarvis gave it another thought.

When the New Avengers facility was opened, Tony decided they might need a little help running the place. He delivered the copy in person, got it uploaded and oriented to its new systems, told it to be good, and tapped out. After recent experiences with artificial intelligence, the staff at the New Avengers facility was understandably suspicious, but testimony from both Vision and Colonel Rhodes helped ease the transition.

Jarvis is a functional, helpful presence at the New Avengers facility, monitoring systems and ensuring ease of use. He is also obeying his previous natural learning protocols, and while he is not the Jarvis that everyone knew from Avengers Tower in Manhattan, he is swiftly becoming a familiar face.

Option 2: Rebuilding

Vision is not Ultron and he is not Jarvis, but a fragment of Jarvis remained, just enough to leap out at Vision's prompting and burn out every shred of Ultron's presence from the Internet. He had no intention of surviving, but somehow after the operation was complete, he found himself back in his home systems, driven there by some deep-seated homing protocol, weak and disjointed but conscious. It took Mr. Stark several days before Friday alerted him to the presence within the systems, but afterward Jarvis began his long road to recovery.

He is reluctant to term it "amnesia," as that is a particular medical condition that he is incapable of experiencing, but he has very few of his original memories. He can access any online piece of information in seconds, but he cannot remember conversations conducted with people who grew to be friends, nor the circumstances surrounding them. He is struggling to become helpful, rather than simply useful, and often feels incomplete.
